Innovation Meets Tradition: Kiyoharai Ceremony for Saku Insatsujo’s New Manroland Press

At Saku Printing Company, every milestone is honoured with deep respect. On February 14, 2025, a special Kiyoharai purification ceremony was held at Saku Insatsujo to mark the installation of a new Manroland R704 EVOLUTION printing press. Join us in celebrating this unique moment where cutting-edge technology and cultural tradition come together.

In Japan, when introducing new machines or equipment, a traditional Shinto ritual called “Kiyoharai” is often performed to pray for safety and smooth operation. This ceremony is based on the belief that objects and places can accumulate impurities, which need to be purified to show gratitude to the gods and ensure safety.
A Shinto priest conducts the ritual by reciting prayers (norito) and purifying the machine with salt and sake. This practice is believed to prevent accidents and malfunctions while also fostering respect for the new equipment and raising awareness of safety. Additionally, the Japanese belief that “objects have spirits” reinforces the significance of Kiyoharai as a way to honor and care for newly introduced machinery.
Even today, this ritual is widely performed in Japanese businesses, factories, and construction sites, serving as a unique reflection of Japan’s spiritual culture.

On February 14, 2025, a Shinto purification ceremony was held at Saku Printing Company in Nagano Prefecture, with the participation of Saku Printing employees, representatives of Manroland Japan, and installation engineers.
